Some silver linings: Engineers can nurse the good Earth back to health in 30 years’ time

Some silver linings

We have, every single one of us, unwittingly brought about the crisis of climate change upon ourselves mostly in the last six decades in our innocent pursuit of happiness. Today, behind the ever-increasing destruction from cyclones, floods, wild fires people generally sense but don’t really understand how these are related to the individual wasteful lifestyles.

The fact that the environmental disorders manifested swiftly in the space of just one lifetime is also a blessing in disguise. Had the climate change taken place more slowly the impact would have been lost.

For the first time individual responsibilities towards climate change have been expressed in numbers:

  • One: Now, 20 HABE (Hiroshima Atom Bombs Equivalent) of heat rains down every second (in the year 2020) increasing from 15 HABE in the year 2000.
  • Two: Now, a HABE of heat rains down on behalf of the average individual in every 12 years’ time. For those enjoying an affluent life style and spending energy (electricity, fossil fuel), say, at four times the average, it is one HABE every 3 years. It is a little more than one HABE of heat every year on behalf of a general affluent family of 4 members.
  • Three: A ton of ice melts somewhere on the Earth: Arctic, Antarctic or some glacier, for the expenditure of 2.50 US$ anywhere.

The engineers (including the applied scientists)

Engineers have given us technologies such as the spaceships, biosynthesis and AI. Harnessed wisely, (together with Entropy Audit, SA), such technologies can help us restore the Earth back to health visibly by 2050.

As has been elaborated in the earlier posts, only a 25% reduction of GDP can help the environment to start on the path of recovery. Remember, Chernobyl became a jungle within 30 years of evacuating the city; the same 30 years separates us from 2050.

  1. The article delves into the current agonising scenario faced by mankind and all life forms brought about by climate change. It gives immense relief to learn that there still is opportunity for mankind to recover from the impending crisis and that the key lies in our hands too. Wonderful anology by the author.
