Welcome to Energy Integral

Hi,

Here is Lingaraj to celebrate our good earth, safe workplace, nil headaches, good ideas, good health and good cheer!!

This write-up is for energy conservation, industrial safety, and preventive maintenance in industrial plants. Further, on environment and R&D too.

I am planning infrequent posts as research takes time. Hopefully on a monthly basis.

Let me, first, present the vision and mission statements of the organization being propagated through the brand Energy Integral:

Vision:

To promote a sustainable environment for the good earth.

Mission:

To pass on the practical arts that brought great benefits, through training and consultancy in energy conservation, industrial safety, and preventive maintenance.

Next, let me present the broad picture of the environment that motivated the above vision and mission statements:

A broad picture of the environment today:

  • Now 20 times the Hiroshima atom bomb’s worth of heat is raining down upon the earth every second because of Radiative Forcing (RF). The figure may reach 35 times the Hiroshima atom bomb’s worth of heat by 2050.
  • Today’s Radiative Forcing (RF) of 3.2 W/m2 constitutes only about 1% of (in simple language) the solar radiation on the Earth, I0 = 340 W/m2. But the cumulative effects of this RF and Green House Gases (GHG) forcing the climate away from its equilibrium of 10,000 years is all too evident within just a few past decades. Notice the increase in the numbers and ferocity of cyclones, draughts, etc.
  • More than 50% of the energy generated is wasted. If eliminated, this by itself can help reset us to a sustainable rate. See the previous point.
  • We are consuming the Earth’s resources at close to twice the sustainable rate. Please do see the website:  https://www.theworldcounts.com/
  • World consumption of petroleum energy in the year 2019 is, 101 million barrels a day, i.e., 230,000,000 TJ/yr. Industry consumes more than half of this quantity worldwide.
  • World consumption of electricity in the year 2018 is 84,000,000 TJ/yr. Again, the industry consumes more than half of this quantity worldwide.
  • Industry consumes more than half of all the energy worldwide.
  • We define this picturesque new unit as HABE (Hiroshima Atom Bomb Equivalent) and use this unit to picturesquely convey the impact of the environmental consequence of our activities as human beings. In the future, we shall define other useful units for a similar purpose.
  • Atmospheric CO2 has risen from 280 ppm in 1950 to 420 ppm today, in just 70 years’ time. We have, thus, added 50% extra GHG blanket (420/280 = 1.5, i.e., 50%) taking Radiative Forcing, (RF) from 2.45 W/m2 (15 HABE/second m2) in 1980 to 3,2 W/m2 today (20 HABE/second m2). In 2050, the RF is expected to be 5.6 W/m2 (35 HABE/second m2).
  • By undertaking energy conservation, we not only save cash for our industries but also contribute toward a sustainable environment.
  • We wish to leave this good earth in a better condition for our children and grandchildren than when we were born here.

Energy wastage is huge, >50%, worldwide!

Please refer to the article titled “The US Now Leads in Energy Waste” on Energy Central

“We have surpassed every nation, including China, in the category of energy waste.  Yes, our country wastes the most energy in the world.  The U.S. has an energy efficiency of 42 per cent, which means 58 per cent of all the energy we produce is wasted!… According to the U.S. Energy Administration, estimates show that the industrial sector consumes more energy every year than any other U.S. entity.”

80% of this energy is petroleum. The whole of the petroleum burnt contributes to two different pollutions to the biosphere:

  • Thermal pollution and,
  • Greenhouse gases

Note, nuclear power plants, on the other hand, contribute only to Thermal pollution. The same shall be true about, say, geothermal energy that adds heat to the biosphere from below the Earth’s surface.

It is very important for us to realize that the issues of (i) energy crisis and (ii) global warming are competing issues. If one wishes to address the issue of energy crisis by developing a clever source of unlimited energy which does not contribute to greenhouse gases, one, nevertheless, make way to heat up the atmosphere and the oceans and melt earth ice at poles, glaciers, and other places. This is very important.

Next post we shall look at more…

Why must we take up energy conservation measures in all our industrial plants should be abundantly clear.

Meanwhile, have a good time. And meditate on how we can, individually, fulfil our desire to leave this good earth in a better condition for our children and grandchildren than we found here when we were born.
